Allergies, they’re so annoying but let’s talk about them anyway

Posted on: February 22, 2013 by Global Pet Foods HRM

Your pet is not trying to drive you crazy, is not compulsive and may actually be suffering from allergies.  Allergies can be seasonal, airborne or dietary.  Read on, we hope this helps you and your companion.

What is an allergy?
An allergy is a hypersensitivity disorder of the immune system, where the immune system overreacts to an otherwise harmless substance.   Allergies develop in three stages:

Stage 1 – Initial exposure
When the pet encounters an allergen, the immune system reacts by generating a large quantity of defense molecules specifically the IgE molecule antibody to bind to the allergen.

Stage 2 – Priming
After the initial exposure to the allergen, the IgE antibodies attach themselves to the immune system cells. They are now primed and ready to be activated.

Stage 3 – The reaction
Consequently, the next time the pet comes in contact with the allergen it will bind to the IgE antibodies and signal the release of histamines and other chemicals, which cause allergy symptoms.

Seasonal allergies: Pollens in the air trigger seasonal allergies and provoke a histamine response in the body.

Airborne allergies can be triggered by: mould, fungi, household cleaners, etc.
Symptoms:  If the pet suffers from an airborne allergy, the reactions will more likely appear in the nose, eyes or lungs.

Dietary Allergies
Dietary allergies are triggered by what the pet ingests.  If the pet suffers from a dietary allergy, the reactions more likely appear on the face, mouth, throat, gastrointestinal tract (including the anus), paws, groin, armpits and ears.  The common reactions are itchy irritated skin, itchy ears, scratching, licking, chewing and hot spots.

The subject of dietary allergies is too huge a topic to cover here and is as individual as your pet.  So if you suspect your dog has food sensitivities or food allergies, we invite you to come into our stores and discuss your situation with us.  Not only do we have pets that suffer from different types of allergies and food sensitivities, over the years we’ve also had many conversations with pet parents and learned from their experiences of how we’ve been able to help their animals.  We are proud to say that we carry many alternative diets and options.  There are many to choose from and the solution may be easier than you thought or more difficult.  Either way, we will attempt to guide you with care.
